Sector and Traffic Plan
The EPAD realized a new traffic concept and orientated itself on the functional separation which Le Corbusier had already proposed in 1933, meaning that the area for pedestrians and vehicles should be seperated.
A straight-line tunnel below ground level should transport the through traffic. The idea was not to destroy the historical continuous arterial road.
Furthermore, they changed and lengthened the underground Métro and the R.E.R.
The residents using a car should use the pear-shaped circular road which leads to the 12 sectors with the help of access roads as you can see on the map on the left. Referring to the "Big Apple" in Manhattan, La Défense is often called "La Grande Poire". The 12th sector in the west is new and the axis should be lenghtened about two kilometers.
The pedestrian area starts at the Point Neuilly and passes through the whole area going along the historical axis.
The new arranged road network contains 22km new roads whereof 1/3 is underground. The underground traffic hub distributes 150.000 people every day.

All in all, the infrastructure of La Défense is very good and elaborate regarding public transportation as well as private transportation. The connection to other areas of Paris and to the City of Paris itself is also very good.
