EDF Tower
Today, La Défense is a large construction area, not only because of the construction of many new and unique buildings but also due to the fact that many old buildings are being renovated. The EDF Tower is one example for the new and modern buildings of the 21. century.
There are several facts that support a revitalization and renovation of the whola area of La Défense. Amongst others, the original plan to make La Défense not only an office location but also a neighborhood kind of failed, because there was not enough housing provided. In the evening, the place is rather empty, because the employees live somwhere else. Furthermore, many companies move to other suburbs due to lower rents and more available space. They leave behind empty buildings. Many important companies, as for example the French bank Société Générale have already moved parts of their offices.
In order to avoid these development, to maintain the prestige and to stay competetive within Europe, the EPAD has developed a plan with the support of the French president Sarkozy.The aims of this plan should be realized until 2015. The visual change of La Défense will be unique and will have no equal. Take a look at the so-called "Plan Renouveau".
Furthermore, some changes have taken place concerning the Planning Tools of La Défense.
The EPAD is no longer responsible for the administration and management, but only for the renovation and modernisation of the quarter.
The former tasks of the EPAD are now filfiled by a new planning tool called the EPGD (Etablissement Public de Gestion du Quartier d`Affaires de la Défense). The EPGD is also responsible for the preservation of the vitality of La Défense.
Another development is the convergence with the EPASA (Etablissement Public Seine Arche á Nanterre) founded in 2000. The cooperation of EPASA and EPAD is occupied with a new project in the west of La Défense which will be completed in 2020. New offices, apartments, industrial areas, new infrastructure, service institutions and many green space will be provided. All in all, the project has a high architectural and ecological standard. It is publicized under "La Défense Seine Arche de la Seine à Neuilly de la Seine à Nanterre". The map on the bottom shows the area of that project which starts in the west part of La Défense, not far away from La Grande Arche.
